How to Ask a Good Tarot Question (and Get a Useful Reading)

The single biggest factor in a useful tarot reading is the question. Here's how to shape one that gives you something real to work with.

The quality of a tarot reading is mostly determined before any cards are drawn. A vague question — "what's going to happen?" — gives a vague reading. A specific, open-ended question gives you something you can actually sit with.

What makes a question "good"

A good tarot question has three properties:

1. It's about you. Not your ex, not your boss, not your sister. The cards reflect *your* situation; asking about someone else is asking the deck to invent facts about a stranger. 2. It's open-ended. "Will I get the promotion?" closes off the conversation. "What do I need to know about this promotion?" opens it up. 3. It points at something you can act on. "When will I meet my soulmate?" is a wish. "What's getting in the way of me dating right now?" is a question.

Examples — bad → better

| Instead of | Try | |---|---| | Will he come back? | What do I need to release from this relationship? | | Should I take the job? | What does each path have to offer me right now? | | When will I be happy? | What's underneath my unhappiness? | | Will I be rich? | What's my relationship with money asking of me? | | Does she like me? | What energy am I bringing into this connection? |

Notice the pattern: the better questions assume you're the one with agency.

The "yes/no" trap

Yes/no questions are tempting because they feel decisive. The trouble is that the cards aren't really built to answer them — you usually end up reading a complex image as a one-bit answer, which strips out everything useful. If you genuinely want a yes/no, use the yes/no tarot reading — it's calibrated for that. For everything else, ask an open question.

Matching the question to the spread

Pick the spread to fit the question, not the other way around. You can see what each spread is designed for in the reading library.

Before you draw

Take thirty seconds. Close your eyes, breathe, and finish this sentence: "What I actually want to understand is…" Whatever comes out is your real question. Ask the cards *that.*
